All of these talking points suggesting that Alberta oil is somehow more ethical are missing the forest for the trees. Alberta oil doesn’t magically stop flooding in B.C., or stop wildfires in Alberta, or stop poor people in the developing world from suffering droughts, floods, wildfires, and a myriad of other disasters made worse by climate change. Can we make the situation better by subsidizing an industry that produces tons of CO2? No. All the climate cares about is how much CO2 was produced, and Alberta oil produces more CO2 per barrel than countries that routinely violate human rights. Ethics don’t play a part in climate change The climate doesn’t care about how oil was produced.
